BRINGING THE ROMANCE HOME

February 11, 2015

I am married. Does that mean I can forget about romance? No, of course not. Adding, or keeping, romance in your life is important for all of us, whether we have a partner or not. As an interior designer, I get to see homes that belong to folks who are married, single and every possible variation in between. In many cases, they are welcoming and warm. In some cases, they might not actually have a sign on the front door saying, “Keep out!” but the message might as well be there.

I remember a wise friend of mine saying to me, when I was single and looking to change that state, that it doesn’t hurt to set up your bedroom and bathroom to be welcoming to an incoming partner. She meant literally: leave room in your medicine cabinet for someone else to leave a toothbrush and supplies. Make certain there are two bedside tables and make a place for someone else to put their book or their water glass.

Of course, you could step that up by making certain that every room in your house feels welcoming. It is the little details that make a big difference. I walked into a neighbor’s living room yesterday that felt completely transformed. All she had done was to add fresh flowers and a couple of scented candles on the sideboard.

In the same vein, my son’s teacher added jam jars with fresh flowers to every table in the classroom. The kids were delighted. What a difference that will make to how they feel about learning. For the parents, it shows the teacher cares about every aspect of her classroom.

But I digress. Back to romance. Why not make your bedroom into a space that is warm and welcoming and, yes, romantic this year? Every time you walk into the room, you will remind yourself that love starts at home, whether you are looking for love or already in love.

You might remember an earlier post that I wrote on chandeliers, where I advocated using them in unusual places. Well, using a chandelier in your bedroom gives you not only a jolt of surprise but adds undeniable drama and romance.

To help you in your quest, Kouboo has free shipping on all chandeliers as well as a 3-day Facebook Sweepstakes, from February 18th to 21st, giving away a Chandelier for the Upcoming 87th Academy Awards.

Don’t miss the chance for a free chandelier!

In the meantime, check out two of my favorites: the smaller Capiz Rain Drop Pendant and the glorious, glittery, Jewel Chandelier. With it’s mix of crystals, chrome and hand-cut capiz seashells, if this fixture were a dress, it would be a ballgown.

This year have a romance with yourself. Go on, I dare you.
